Auto Body Mechanic

​Job Scope and Responsibilities:

The Auto Body Mechanic is responsible for the repair, restoration, and refinishing of truck cabs and heavy equipment bodies within the S.B. Cox Ready Mix fleet. This role focuses on body repair (including fiberglass and metal), surface preparation, and painting to ensure all vehicles maintain a professional appearance, structural integrity, and roadworthiness, supporting the company’s concrete delivery operations.

Key Duties:

• Body Repair and Restoration:

  • Perform body repair work on truck cabs (primarily Mack trucks) and other heavy equipment, including metal straightening, dent removal, rust repair, and fiberglass repair. using advanced techniques such as MIG welding and sheet metal fabrication.

  • Conduct structural repairs, fabricate custom parts soldiering components, panel replacement and reinforcement, assemble vehicle parts with mechanical expertise to restore damaged truck bodies and components

  • Execute full preparation processes including sanding, grinding, masking, and priming surfaces for painting.

 

• Painting and Finishing:

  • Apply high-quality paint finishes using spray equipment, matching existing colors and ensuring smooth, durable results.

  • Perform spot repairs, complete cab repaints, and clear-coat applications to industry standards.

  • Buff and polish finished surfaces to achieve a professional, like-new appearance.

 

• Operational Support:

  • Inspect truck cabs and equipment for damage and provide accurate repair estimates and timelines.

  • Test and verify repairs meet safety and quality standards before returning vehicles to service.

  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, materials used, and service history for all fleet assets.

 

• Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Diesel Mechanic team, drivers, dispatch, and shop supervisors to coordinate repairs and minimize equipment downtime.

  • Provide input on body and paint conditions to support overall fleet management decisions.

• Compliance and Safety:

  • Adhere to all company safety policies, health regulations (including proper PPE and ventilation requirements for painting), and industry standards during bodywork and refinishing.

  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and secure to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.

Qualifications:

• Proven experience as an Auto Body Mechanic with strong skills in metal and fiberglass repair (minimum 2-3 years preferred).

• Solid knowledge of body repair techniques, surface preparation, painting systems, and refinishing processes.

• Proficiency with body shop tools and equipment, including welders, grinders, sanders, spray guns, and paint mixing systems.

• Experience working on heavy-duty trucks (Mack trucks preferred) and other heavy equipment is a strong plus.

• Valid driver’s license; CDL is a plus but not required.

• Physical ability to lift heavy parts, stand for long periods, and work in various conditions (including paint booth environments).

• Detail-oriented with excellent problem-solving and color-matching skills.

•  Good communication skills and a team-oriented mindset.

• Relevant certifications (e.g., I-CAR, ASE Body Repair, or paint manufacturer certifications) are advantageous but not mandatory.
